About Me

Cjkainzwideuchicago

Currently, I am the Senior Director for Academic Technologies within Networking Services & Information Technologies (NSIT) at the University of Chicago. In my capacity as one of seven senior directors, I report to the Vice President and Chief Information Officer, Gregory A. Jackson, with the responsibility of guiding and supporting the teaching, learning, and research information technology needs of students and faculty at one of the world's leading research universities.

Open collaboration built upon free-flowing ideas tempered by a sense of what is possible is crucial in creating and sustaining a healthy and nimble technology organization. As a result, some of my work-related interests include developing physical and virtual collaborative technology environments (which includes the relationship of people, technology and space), exploring new and non-traditional avenues for building inter-organizational relationships, and investigating personal, social, and shared technologies as alternatives to the desktop/server status quo (is there a role in the enterprise for personal media and mobile technologies, online entertainment systems and video games, network-enabled consumer electronics, and scalable, flexible, and economically sustainable utility computing?). To put it another way, accomplish what my staff has characterized in our overall unit vision – create an organization that balances stability with innovation. This notion is coupled with looking forward at what will impact us tomorrow and the continual organizational evolution that must occur to meet the set of challenges that will arrive the day after tomorrow.

Outside of work, I enjoy music, videography, photography, art and design, live theater, model railroading (specifically, N-scale), long walks, travel, and good food. In addition, my fiancée's academic pursuits in Anglo-Saxon literature and culture have rekindled my personal interest in older architecture, especially within the medieval period throughout Scotland, England, and Wales, and inspired us to work together on hwaet.net. As of late, I've started fiddling with music once again (I used to sing many, many years ago). Apple's GarageBand and Logic have been the tools feeding my interest in music and recording.
