Biographical Sketch

Cjkainz Chad J. Kainz is the Senior Director for Academic Technologies, a leadership role that spans the areas of teaching, learning, research, and scholary technology at the University of Chicago. He has been at Chicago for well over a decade, starting as a Computer Graphics & Multimedia Specialist in 1992, working his way up to Director of Instructional Technology in 1998, and moving into his current position in 2002. Prior to his arrival at Chicago, he spent quite a bit of time in New Orleans attending school, enjoying good food and music, and working in advertising, commercial multimedia design, and IT consulting. His current work-related interests include the exploring the relationship between space, technology, and people, and unexpected uses of technology in scholarship. In his "spare" time, he acts as the campus IT liaison to the Coalition for Networked Information, participates in the Ivy League "Plus" Academic Computing Directors Group, is a member of the Committee on Institutional Cooperation's Research Computing Working Group, and is involved with international IT standards work as a member of the IEEE Learning Technology Standards Committee.

Principles

In the Fall of 2003 I launched an initiative at the University of Chicago known as START – Support for Technology & Applications in Research & Teaching. The initiative embraced five principles that I believe should be the foundation stones of any successful information technology organization and represent a set of core ideals that I adhere to.
